Michael "Erik" Ertsgaard, passed away unexpectedly on August 14th, 2023, at his home in Moyock,
NC. He was only 47 years old. His family is deeply saddened by his sudden death. Erik was born on
September 3, 1975.
Erik is survived by his two precious daughters, Marissa and Hailey Ertsgaard, who were the apples
of his eye, his parents James "Sonny" and Alice Ertsgaard and forever remembered by his
brother Richard "Rick" Nelson. Erik will also be greatly missed by Uncles, Aunts, and many cousins. He
will also be missed by the family pets, Talon, Mellow Yellow Marshmallow and Einstein, but his family will
always care and love them.
Erik was born and had grown up in Chesapeake, VA and attended Indian River high school where he
graduated in 1993. He loved baseball and played 3rd base for school and REC ball. He went
on to work in different trades to which he fell in love with cranes. Erik attended Heavy Equipment
College of North Carolina in 2019, and earned the title certified NCCCO, and had begun his career with
Osborne Welding.
Erik was a private and quiet person, but also very witty and fun! He was fearless and independent, yet sensitive
and incredibly compassionate. He was a fun spirited soul who took on many passions. One of which
included representing his Norwegian heritage with his epic Viking beard and Viking tattoos. Erik had an
abundance of joy in hunting and fishing, but especially when his daughters or Dad participated. He found
comfort and peace in capturing sunrises and early morning swims with his daughters at any beach, but
especially at Corolla Beach, NC. Erik found pure pleasure participating in all activities, like geocaching,
for his girls. He even took the courses needed to teach the archery class for their girl scout
troops.
Ones who knew Erik were always delighted to see his choice of Halloween costumes yearly. Marissa
and Hailey took on Erik's passion for scary goblins and ghosts when they became old enough.
You were also guaranteed they would travel to Kings Dominion each year for the Haunted Halloween
events. His other expression of joy was his choice of music. Erik loved to jam out to Rock n Roll and
could always be found at a variety of concerts in surrounding areas. He also enjoyed lemon drops,
Texas Pete Hot Sauce on everything, Star Wars and Star Trek. You would seldom see Erik
without his hat or sunglasses, and you were not lucky if you didn't get a "Right On" from him,
as this was his favorite saying.
One of many memoirs that Erik boasted about was taking the plunge skydiving with his dad to
celebrate his 70th birthday. As Erik landed with such a satisfying smile on his face, it enlarged even
more when his 2 little girls came running to him. There are no words to describe Erik's
infatuation for the New York Mets and the Washington Redskins. With that being said, we are asking
that in memory of Erik, everyone would please wear their favorite sports attire to the Memorial Service.
Family and friends are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life and Memorial Service which will be
held at the Moyock Baptist Church on Sunday, September 3, 2023 beginning at 5:00pm. The family will receive friends at the church starting at 4:00pm. In lieu of flowers, Erik's parents
and brother ask that a memorial donation be made in his honor for his young daughters. Please
reach out to his family directly regarding information on donating to the fund.
Professional Services of comfort have been entrusted to Adkins Memorial Funeral Home of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
