Marjorie Fortune Obituary

“If when you give the best of your service, Telling the world that the Savior is come; Be not dismayed when men don't believe you; He'll understand; and say, "Well done." Oh, when I come to the end of my journey, Weary of life and the battle is won; Carrying the staff and the cross of redemption, He'll understand and say, "Well done."

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Marjorie Fortune who entered into eternal rest on August 11, 2024 at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, North Carolina.

Her life will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 28, 2024 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Elizabeth City, North Carolina beginning at 11:00am. Masks are required if attending the service.

As Marjorie lived a rich life, she leaves behind an equally rich legacy filled with love, laughter, and built upon faith. In lieu of traditional mourning, we the family have chosen to celebrate. To celebrate a life well-lived.

Marjorie was raised in Newark, NJ where she was educated at Charlton Street School and Girls Vocational and Technical High School. Marjorie married and raised her family there. In the late 1960’s she fell in love with the Lord and was baptized Catholic. Joining the Catholic church and raising her family in the Catholic faith, she also educated her children in the Catholic school system. Her faith was strong as those who knew her in the end were witnesses to.

Marjorie worked. She had a strong work ethic which she passed onto her children. She worked in various industries until she retired in 1997 and relocated to Camden, NC in 1998. While in Camden she became a member of Holy Family Catholic Church continuing in her strong Catholic faith which carried her throughout the entirety of her life.

Marjorie would certainly most assuredly have been considered a rebel of her time. She was someone who understood the rules but danced to the beat of her own drum. She was a straight shooter who believed in individuality. She was a fighter, courageous and strong. She was brave because of her faith. She allowed her faith to carry her through this life, sharing it with those she encountered. Family and friends would be told when questioning trials in life how things were Blessings in Disguise and Not to be afraid to take the road less traveled. She knew where her help came from, and this faith was her North Star.

If you knew her you would know the hallmarks of her character were her wisdom gained through life experiences, strength, and resilience. With those Marjorie held many titles, achieved many goals, and performed many roles. Marjorie was a warrior, a fighter, and she fought until she decided to fight no more. As with any other warrior, the battle ended on her terms when her work was done, and she did it on her terms.

She was so much to so many. To those who have now preceded her in death: to Oscar Riddick and Josephine Sharpe Riddick she was daughter, Carol Green, and Robert Sharpe she was sister.

From there she became both wife and promoted to mother. As a mother, a role she both delighted in and cherished, she was promoted many times, achieving a lifetime achievement that many hope to gain but few do. Her legacy and memory will forever be the guiding light and shining star of her four children:  Deborah Lynn Smith, Terrance Sterling Brown Sr, Stacy Joanna Brown, and Marcus Fitzgerald Fortune with whom she shared 10 grandchildren: Christopher W. Fowles, Anissa L. Fowles, Kyle L. Green, Terrance S. Brown Jr, Danielle L Brown, Paige A. Brown, Kaylynn M. Little, Kameron S. James, Marquise Fortune, and Jarrod Fortune. She had 6 Great-Grandchildren: Danea L. Bryant, Jordan U. Fowles, Christopher W. Fowles II, Bryson F. James, Elena G. Little, and Eli R. Little, and finally 2 Great-Great Grandchildren Koda L. Thomas, and Harley L. Thomas. This abundant living legacy is rounded out by a host of cousins, and special friends Helen, Gloria, Hazel, and Minnie. She will forever be remembered and live on in all of our hearts. We invite all to join us in remembering a truly remarkable woman.

She will be laid to rest along with other family members at Glendale Cemetery in Bloomfield, NJ.
