Obituary

And then one day
We'll all cross that river
And fight life's final war with pain
And then, as death gives way to victory
I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He reigns
Because He lives I can face tomorrow
Because He lives all fear is gone
Because I know, I know He holds the future
And life is worth the living just because He lives...

Joseph Morris Spence, Sr was born to the late Aaron Edward Spence and Bessie Irene Lowry
Spence on August 31, 1948. He is preceded in death by the late Laura Jane Malone Spence.
To this union was born four children: Joseph (Iesha) Spence; Kem (Tammie) Spence; Kenya
(Troy) Reid; Daniel (Michelle) Spence all of Elizabeth City, North Carolina.
Morris was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, cousin, friend. Morris was a hero to
many, his positive influence on everyone affected all that knew him. Morris loved working with
his hands and retired from construction work in 1984. After retiring, he formed a business with
his brother Welt called “The hardy able construction crew”..LOL From that business Morris
transferred his skills to his sons and revamped the business to “All Decked Out”...(smile) where
they build decks all over Elizabeth City. Morris was known as the family mathematician and
historian. He remembered all things dealing with numbers. If you needed any past history, you
could “ask Morris”.
Morris gave his life to the Lord at an early age at Mt. Carmel Missionary Baptist Church
where he remained a member until his death. Morris diligently served the Lord through his
voice. He loved singing and loved his family. Morris often cooked for his family. Daddy we are
going to miss your fish, sweet pickles, peanuts, sausage, and cooked wildlife. His grandchildren
enjoyed him cooking the Spence traditional Sunday breakfast consisting of pork chops,
macaroni, and sweet potato biscuits.
Morris is preceded in death by the following sibling’s Johnny Spence, Edward (Daisy)
Spence, Alexander Spence, Gracie Walker, Welton Spence, Halla Rose Sylvester, June Faye
(Richard)Akers
Morris leaves to cherish: Eloise Taylor, Theresa(Tyrone) Williams, Annie
(William)Gardner, Marietta (Kenneth)Townsend, Clement (Sylvia) Spence. 18 grandchildren that
affectionately called him Pop-Pop; 11 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
