Jane Haynes Obituary

Jane Grandy Sanders Haynes, 74, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, April 7, 2021 in her home.  She was born in Elizabeth City, NC on February 15, 1947 to Margaret Lee Seymour Sanders and Bradford Bell Sanders.

She is survived by her children Suzanne Ott (Michael) of Elizabeth City, NC, Allison Morhard (Chris) of Anniston, AL, John Haynes (Cathy) of Nags Head, NC, Andrew Haynes (Kassie) of Gastonia, NC, Rebecca Claffey (Chris) of Wilmington, NC and grandchildren, Love, Millicent, Olivia, Christopher, William, Mannon, Macey, Jackson, Cooper and Amelia.  She is also survived by her brother, Bradford B. Sanders, Jr. (Debbie) of Currituck, NC and nephew, Bradford B. Sanders, III of Chesapeake, VA.  She was predeceased by her husband, John Elliott Haynes, DDS.

Jane graduated from Elizabeth City High School in 1965.  She earned a degree in Fashion Merchandising from the Fashion Institute of America Massey Junior College in Atlanta, Georgia.  After college she returned to her beloved hometown of Elizabeth City where she worked at Belk Tyler as the display manager. It was in Elizabeth City that she met and married her husband of 42 years, John Haynes.  Jane supported her husband with her friendly personality in his dental office for 30 years as his receptionist and chair side assistant or as the “Front Woman” or “Boss Lady” as she was affectionately called.

Jane was happiest in her kitchen cooking for her family and friends.  Meal planning and prep, or “lining it up” as she referred to it, would often begin days in advance and involve numerous trips to the grocery store.    She was always happy to set one or more places at the table as anyone and everyone was always welcome for dinner.

Just as Jane never met a person not welcome at the dinner table there was never an animal she would not take in.  Dogs, cats, ducks, rabbits and even an opossum all found a loving home in Jane’s house.  All creatures, human and animals, could always expect to receive warm hospitality, good food, love and acceptance from Jane.

Many health issues plagued Jane during the last years of her life and she was in pain for much of that time.  Despite this, whenever she was asked how she felt her response was usually, pretty good or not to bad.  There may not be a better example of a glass half full attitude.

The family owes a debt of gratitude to Albemarle Home Care and Hospice especially Anita and Amanda for their dedication to Jane’s care, physical and mental and for always making her laugh.  The family is incredibly grateful for the assistance of Janice Dance’s team of caregivers, Theresa McCarthy, and Jane’s network of friends for their assistance with care and social visits.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.  Memorial donations can be made to Albemarle Commission’s Area Agency on Aging at 512 South Church Street, Hertford, NC  27944.
