Demetrius Staten Obituary

When peace, like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot. thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well, with my soul."

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Mr. Demetrius Ray Staten who answered the Master's Call on Thursday, June 10 2021 in Greensboro, North Carolina. Celebration of Life Services will take place on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at Memorial Missionary Baptist Church at 2:00pm. Interment will be held at the Dove's Landing Cemetery in Elizabeth City, North Carolina immediately following the Celebration of Life Service. Viewing and visitation will take place on Friday, June 18, 2021 from 5pm-7pm at the funeral home. Everyone attending either service, must wear a mask.

At an early age, Demetrius joined Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church where he was an active member, of the Trotman Troubadours. He attended public schools in Pasquotank and Guilford County. After high school, he received his Associate Degree from the College of the Albermarle in Elizabeth City, NC. His degree provided him with a number of opportunities to impact the lives of others. He served as a director of a local group home in Greensboro, NC for several years before his health began to fail. Though his health impacted his initial career plan it did not stop his passion for working and serving others. He began at Walmart as a local greeter where he quickly captured their hearts and was moved to customer services. Twelve years ago he started the Debroah Derrice Foundation in honor of his late sister, Deborah Derrice Staten. The foundation was founded on the principles of service. The foundation regularly fed the homeless, provided Christmas for less fortunate youth, and other service projects to help the local community. Two weeks prior to his death he donated 150 boxes of cleaning supplies to those in need.

He leaves to cherish behind his loving mother Debroah Staten of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers Derrick E. Staten, Jr., Toby E. Staten, both of Greensboro, NC; three sisters Tonya E. Staten, of Los Angles, CA, Aaliyah Staten, of New London CT, Johara Wilson, of York, PA.; two aunts Linda “Darlene” Moore, and LaTonya Moore Jones (Ervin) both of Elizabeth City; seven uncles, Johnnie Moore, Jr. and James Staten (Patricia) both of Elizabeth City, NC Curtis Moore (Janet), Timothy Moore (Deneen), Lynn Moore (Rosemary), Allen Moore, all of Greensboro, NC, and Lymon Staten of Chesapeake, VA, four great-aunts, Geneva Sutton, Bertha Moore, Yvonne Moore, and Marcia James all of Elizabeth City, NC and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Demetrius was preceded in death by his father Derrick E. Staten Sr., and his sister Deborah Derrice Staten.
