When peace, like a river attendeth my way, when sorrows like sea billows roll, whatever my lot. thou hast taught me to say, it is well, it is well, with my soul."

At an early age, Demetrius joined Corner Stone Missionary Baptist Church where he was an active member, of the Trotman Troubadours. He attended public schools in Pasquotank and Guilford County. After high school, he received his Associate Degree from the College of the Albermarle in Elizabeth City, NC. His degree provided him with a number of opportunities to impact the lives of others. He served as a director of a local group home in Greensboro, NC for several years before his health began to fail. Though his health impacted his initial career plan it did not stop his passion for working and serving others. He began at Walmart as a local greeter where he quickly captured their hearts and was moved to customer services. Twelve years ago he started the Debroah Derrice Foundation in honor of his late sister, Deborah Derrice Staten. The foundation was founded on the principles of service. The foundation regularly fed the homeless, provided Christmas for less fortunate youth, and other service projects to help the local community. Two weeks prior to his death he donated 150 boxes of cleaning supplies to those in need.
He leaves to cherish behind his loving mother Debroah Staten of Elizabeth City, NC; two brothers Derrick E. Staten, Jr., Toby E. Staten, both of Greensboro, NC; three sisters Tonya E.
